Psychological Assessment
Understanding yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do.
At Iyashi Psychology, our psychological assessments are designed to give you clarity — not just a diagnosis. Whether you're seeking answers for yourself, your child, or someone you love, our warm and thorough assessment process helps you understand how your mind works, what gets in the way, and what support will actually help.
We work with children, adolescents, and adults across all stages of life, offering a range of evidence-based assessments delivered with care, respect, and a genuine curiosity about the whole person in front of us.
What is Psychological Assessment?
A psychological assessment is a comprehensive, structured process that helps identify how a person thinks, learns, processes information, and experiences the world. It goes far beyond a checklist — it draws together clinical interviews, standardised tools, behavioural observations, and detailed history-gathering to build a full picture of your strengths, challenges, and needs.
At the end of the process, you'll receive a detailed written report with clear findings and practical recommendations — whether that's for school, the workplace, support services, or your own self-understanding.
Assessments at Iyashi Psychology are carried out by registered psychologists with extensive training in neurodevelopmental and cognitive assessment.
Who Are Assessments For?
Psychological assessments can be helpful at any stage of life. You might be considering an assessment if:
Your child is struggling at school and you're not sure why
You've always felt like your brain works differently, and you want to understand how
You're an adult who suspects you may have ADHD or autism but have never been assessed
A teacher, GP, or other professional has suggested an assessment
You want to understand your child's learning profile, including whether they may be gifted
You're seeking documentation for workplace adjustments, NDIS access, or educational support
You don't need a referral to book an assessment at Iyashi Psychology, though we're happy to work alongside your GP or other treating professionals.
Types of Assessments Offered:
-
Our ADHD assessments explore attention, executive function, impulsivity, and hyperactivity across different settings and life contexts. We take a thorough, whole-person approach — looking not just at symptoms, but at how ADHD shows up in your daily life, relationships, and sense of self.
Suitable for children, adolescents, and adults.
-
Our autism assessments are conducted using gold-standard tools in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. We understand that autism can look different across ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds, and we approach every assessment with that in mind.
We do not pathologise difference — our goal is to help you understand your neurology so you can access the right support and advocate for your needs.
Suitable for children, adolescents, and adults.
-
ADHD and autism frequently co-occur, and their presentations can overlap in complex ways. Our combined assessment explores both profiles together, giving you a more complete and accurate picture rather than assessing each in isolation.
This is often the most efficient and clinically meaningful pathway for people who resonate with both profiles.
Suitable for children, adolescents, and adults.
-
A cognitive assessment explores how you process and use information — including reasoning, memory, processing speed, and problem-solving. These assessments are often used to better understand learning differences, inform educational planning, or provide documentation for academic accommodations.
Suitable for children, adolescents, and adults.
-
If reading, writing, spelling, or maths has always felt disproportionately difficult, a learning assessment can help explain why. We assess for specific learning disorders including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia, and provide recommendations to support learning at school, university, and beyond.
Suitable for children, adolescents, and adults.
-
Giftedness is often misunderstood — and frequently missed, particularly in children who also have learning differences (sometimes called twice-exceptional or 2e learners). Our giftedness assessments identify advanced cognitive ability and help families and educators understand how to best support a child who may be both highly capable and struggling.
Suitable for children and adolescents.
What to Expect: The Assessment Process
We know that starting an assessment can feel daunting. Here's what the process typically looks like at Iyashi Psychology:
-
Get in touch with us via our contact form or phone. Our admin team will guide you through the right assessment pathway and answer any initial questions.
-
Before your first appointment, we'll send through some questionnaires and background forms. For children's assessments, we'll also request information from parents and often from teachers.
-
Your assessing psychologist will meet with you (and/or your child) for an in-depth clinical interview. This is a conversation, not an interrogation — we want to understand your history, your experiences, and what you're hoping to learn.
-
Depending on the type of assessment, you'll attend one or more sessions where standardised tools and tasks are administered. Sessions are designed to be as comfortable as possible, and we always work at your pace.
-
Your psychologist will carefully analyse all findings and write a comprehensive report. This takes time — we want to get it right.
-
We'll meet with you to walk through the report together, answer your questions, and talk through next steps. You won't just receive a document — you'll leave with a real understanding of what it means for you.
Fees & Funding
We believe access to quality assessment shouldn't be a barrier. Iyashi Psychology accepts the following funding options:
Medicare Rebates Some components of psychological assessment may attract a Medicare rebate with a valid referral. We recommend speaking with your GP about what may be applicable to your situation.
NDIS We work with NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. Please contact us to discuss how your plan may be used to fund an assessment.
Private Health Insurance Depending on your level of cover, your private health insurer may contribute to assessment costs. We recommend checking directly with your provider before booking.
Out-of-Pocket Fees Our assessment fees reflect the significant time involved in clinical interviewing, standardised testing, report writing, and feedback. We are transparent about fees upfront and will provide a full breakdown before you confirm your booking.
Please contact us directly for current fee information.
Frequently Asked Questions:
-
No — you can self-refer for an assessment at Iyashi Psychology. However, a GP referral may be required to access certain Medicare rebates, so it's worth discussing with your doctor.
-
This depends on the type of assessment. Most assessments involve two to four appointments across several weeks, plus time for report writing. We'll give you a clear timeline during your intake.
-
Not always — and that's okay. Our goal is to give you the most accurate and honest picture of your profile. Sometimes an assessment confirms a diagnosis; sometimes it rules things out or points in a different direction. Either way, you leave with greater clarity.
-
Report turnaround times vary, but we aim to provide reports within four to six weeks of the final assessment session. We'll keep you informed throughout.
-
Yes. Your information is handled in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act and our professional ethical obligations. We'll discuss confidentiality and any exceptions with you at your first appointment.
-
Some components of assessments can be completed remotely. Please contact us to discuss what's possible for your specific assessment pathway.
